You've probably seen and tried them before, the eye-catching ones 3D tours from the US company Matterport with the unique interactive 3D dollhouse view.

The special thing about these tours is the combination of high-resolution 360° Photos with a 3D image of the interior in the background, in which one can move freely with many selectable positions.

A system with many advantages

In addition to the unique 3D view and navigation, the Matterport 3D Tour scores with the possibility of being anywhere in the room precise measurements with small deviations of approx. 1%. This is a big plus for all those who, in addition to photorealistic documentation, also need simple measurements of the object.

Another plus are the razor-sharp 134 megapixel panoramas at every position for in-tour zooms of up to +300% and for excellent, high-resolution snapshot images, which can be dragged from the 3D Tour from any angle.

In particular, for shop owners or for the hospitality industry, the possibility has been created that the Matterport 3D Tour can be inexpensively integrated into the map service of Google Street View can be imported.     Where there is light there is also shadow

    But Matterport's highly automated system also has drawbacks.

    That's how they are Content tied to the Matterport Cloud and cannot be played on your own computer. You can download or purchase the individual components (Matterpak with 3D model, panoramas, etc.), but the player that assembles and can play the data is not freely available. 

    Furthermore, with the exception of a blur marker (especially for faces and security technology), the recordings cannot be changed and are therefore also no retouching and no Photoshop edits possible. Everything is recorded 1:1 and must be depicted as it is found.

    And the camera scanner doesn't work in sunlight. So they are 3D recording indoors only possible. Outdoor shots can already be taken (so-called 360 views), but these are only available as pure 360° shots without the 3D effect in the 3D tour. In these outdoor shots, no measurements can then be made and it can be done there no info points be set with additional information.

    Finally, you are tied to the Matterport Cloud with the recorded content, and unfortunately this is anything but cheap. We major customers also pay comparatively high monthly fees Hosting costs per 3D modelthat on the Matterport Website are visible.

    More light than shadow

    Looking at the pros and cons, the pros clearly outweigh the cons.

    Matterport is that perfect system for any temporary content or even for any temporary spaces (e.g. exhibitions, trade fair stands or construction documentation, etc.).

    If it has to be fast and the price should be manageable and if cloud hosting outside the EU is not a problem, then 3D photography is an option Matterport to me the first choice.
